West Coast Heroes

Coming Soon - A new project I am just putting into motion.

Capturing our Auckland West Coast Surf Lifesaving Heroes.

This photography project aims to spotlight the dedicated men and women of the Karekare, Piha, Muriwai, and Bethells Beach Surf Lifesaving Clubs, capturing them in action throughout the busy summer season. These volunteers are the unsung heroes of our beloved beaches, working tirelessly to ensure the safety of locals and visitors alike. While we often take for granted the sense of security they provide, their selflessness and commitment deserve far more recognition. Through this series, I hope to give these incredible individuals the acknowledgement they truly deserve, shedding light on their crucial role in preserving both the safety and spirit of these coastal communities.

While the idea of working at the beach during summer may sound like a dream to many, the reality for these lifeguards is far from a typical "day at the beach." The amount of planning and coordination that goes into a weekend patrol is far more complex than most realize. The training required to be part of this dedicated team is intense, ensuring that these volunteers are always ready for any situation. So why do they do it? Simply put, I think they do it for the love of the environment, the feeling of comradery and family that a SLSC provides, and their commitment to protecting the public at some of Auckland’s most dangerous shores. This project aims to highlight the extraordinary dedication and passion behind the lifeguards' work, showcasing the hard work, sacrifice, and community spirit that goes into keeping us safe.
